Save Madryn Street.

Save Madryn Street Group, "Liddypool" Author Dave Bedford, Chris Johnson of Mercury Press, Chairman Philip Coppell and TravelToLiverpool.com owner Steve Barnes with Ringo Starr lookalike Max Frudd at the launch of Save Madryn Street.

Beatle Guide Philip Coppell is Chairman of the Save Madryn Street Group; number 9 Madryn Street being the birthplace of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and where Ringo spent the first five years of his life.

As part of the failed Housing Market Renewal Initiative (HMRI), the Welsh Streets area of Liverpool, 444 houses in total, are under threat of demolition including Ringo Starr’s birthplace.  In any other City this would be a protected house, but not in Liverpool, where none of the Beatle birthplaces or houses are protected and any one of them could be demolished.

There has been a fierce and on going fight to prevent Liverpool City Council from demolishing the Welsh Streets and in doing so robbing Beatle fans of an important connection to the Fab Four.

Philip Coppell has been at the forefront of this campaign, as Chairman of Save Madryn Street he has been interviewed by television and radio stations worldwide, as well as contributing to many newspaper and magazine articles in the fight to save Ringo’s birthplace.

Ringo only had one birthplace; for most of his life in Liverpool he lived at number 10 Admiral Grove, which, thankfully, is not under threat of demolition. Other places in Britain where Ringo Starr lived have already been demolished.  His London Compton Avenue house, where he lived from 1969 until 1973, has been demolished to make way for another development.
