Philip with The Independent's Travel Editor, Simon Calder.

"Simply put, if you want to see Liverpool, you want to see Phil. He knows the city like the back of his hand. With the front of it, employing a cheerful wave, he can bypass the long queues outside the popular tourist attractions. Phil knows everyone by their first name and they know him. He can talk his way into anywhere, but equally importantly he will listen to what you want to see and do.
Phil declares he has the best job in the world, showing people around a city he loves.
Phil is a bona fide Beatles tour guide, more than an expert, Phil is a veritable encyclopaedia on Beatles trivia. He offers extensive magical mystery tours of Liverpool, complete with fascinating commentary."

"I was determined to see something of a city I knew almost nothing about beyond the Fab Four, the football team and the ferry. Step in Philip Coppell, full-time city guide, Beatles expert and holder of many, many Merseyside anecdotes. In four short hours I saw the best of the city. Even better, it's all done with the usual Scouse sense of humour. When sculptor Antony Gormley put his iconic iron statues on the beaches of Crosby, he was overjoyed that the people of Liverpool had started to interact with them. 'When Mr Gormley displayed them elsewhere, people had been nervous of them; explained Phil. 'Here, we've dressed them up and had barbecues around them. Although investing in a good guidebook is essential, they don't always paint a true picture. Better to invest your money on getting a local, someone who has lived and breathed a destination, to show you around."

Tour guide Philip Coppell talks to tourists at the end of his 'Magical Mystery Tour' - a tour of sites related to The Beatles, outside The Cavern Club in Liverpool, north-west England. The tours, which run throughout the year, take international visitors to many sites connected to the famous British band, including childhood homes, schools, locations of famous concerts and sites of interest that were written about in their music.
